Charges back to the Top Step through Injury and Adversity

After back to back races in California that brought plenty of drama, Trans Am GT driver Chris Coffey made an emphatic statement at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, charging to victory in the GT class and finishing as the top-performing GT car over all classes.

Fresh off a string of tough setbacks, including a seized gearbox at Laguna Seca and a teammate’s crash during the same California round, Coffey arrived at Mid-Ohio facing yet another major obstacle: a torn ligament in his hand. Originally expected to sideline him, the injury threatened to put an early pause on his season. But anyone who knows Coffey knows he doesn’t give up easily. In true racer fashion, he removed his cast early — determined to make the start and push through the pain.

“I wasn’t about to sit this one out,” Coffey said. “I tried testing the car with the cast on and it just wasn’t going to work. It was a big risk to cut it off (the cast) myself, but it was the only way we could compete. ”

That determination paid off. Behind the wheel of his Traffic Grafix Maserati MC GT4, Coffey delivered a flawless performance, navigating the technical twists of Mid-Ohio with precision and pace. The result: first in class, top overall GT finisher, and a hard-earned reminder that this driver is a force to be reckoned with.

But Coffey wasn’t done there, the second race of the back to back rounds came at Road America — a track where Coffey has unfinished business. Two years ago, rear suspension failure in the notorious Kink ended his weekend — and nearly his Maserati — in spectacular fashion.

“Last year here at Road America was more about surviving the weekend” says Coffey. “This year our number one goal is getting back our confidence to drive the kink like just any other corner.”

Coffey did just that by setting a new GT Class Track Record in Qualifying and bringing home another commanding flag to flag victory in the season.

Stay tuned as Chris Coffey continues his charge toward the 2025 Trans Am GT class title.
